Natural Habitat & Origin
Guppies originate from northeastern South America, particularly Venezuela, Barbados, and Trinidad. They have been introduced worldwide for mosquito control and are now found on every continent except Antarctica. Their incredible adaptability explains why they are so hardy in home aquariums.
Tank Setup
- Tank size: 10 gallons minimum for a small group. A 20-gallon long is ideal for a breeding colony.
- Filter: Sponge filter is ideal โ provides filtration without sucking up fry
- Heater: Yes โ keep at 74โ78ยฐF for optimal health
- Plants: Heavily planted tanks are best, especially with guppy grass, java moss, and hornwort which provide hiding spots for fry
- Substrate: Any substrate works โ sand or gravel
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72โ82ยฐF (22โ28ยฐC)
- pH: 6.8โ7.8 (slightly alkaline preferred)
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: below 20 ppm
- GH: 8โ12 dGH (guppies prefer moderately hard water)
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: High-quality flake or micro pellet food
- Supplements: Frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms 2โ3x per week
- Vegetables: Blanched zucchini, spinach, or spirulina-based foods
- Fry food: Crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, or powdered fry food
Breeding
Guppies are livebearers and breed incredibly easily โ this is both a pro and a con. A single female can store sperm for months and produce a new batch of 20โ50 fry every 28โ30 days.
If you don't want babies, keep only males. Male-only tanks are colorful and peaceful. If you want to breed, use a 2:1 female-to-male ratio to reduce harassment of females.
Provide dense floating plants (guppy grass, java moss) for fry to hide in. Adult guppies will eat their own young if they can catch them.
Tank Mates
- Corydoras catfish, neon tetras, endlers, platies, mollies
- Cherry shrimp, amano shrimp, nerite snails
- Harlequin rasboras, ember tetras, otocinclus
Avoid keeping with bettas (males may mistake guppies for rival bettas), angelfish (will eat guppies), and any aggressive species.
