Bristlenose vs Common Pleco
Many beginners accidentally buy a common pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus) which grows to 12โ24 inches and needs a 100+ gallon tank. Bristlenose plecos max out at 4โ5 inches and are far more suitable for typical home aquariums.
Tank Setup
- Tank size: 20 gallons minimum
- Driftwood: Essential โ bristlenose plecos need wood fiber in their diet and will rasp on driftwood constantly
- Hiding spots: Caves, PVC pipes, coconut shells. Males are territorial about their chosen cave.
- Substrate: Any โ they spend most time on surfaces, not the substrate
Diet & Feeding
- Algae: They graze on tank surfaces but need supplemental food as tanks mature
- Driftwood: They rasp on wood for fiber โ always have driftwood available
- Vegetables: Blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach (drop in at lights-out)
- Pellets: Sinking algae wafers, Repashy gel foods
Tank Mates
Peaceful with nearly all community fish. Their armored body protects them from semi-aggressive species. Can even be kept with goldfish (one of few tropical fish that overlaps with goldfish temperature range). Males may be territorial with other bottom dwellers near their cave, but this is usually harmless posturing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big do bristlenose plecos get?
4โ5 inches. Males are slightly larger than females and develop prominent bristles on their nose after about 6 months of age.
Do bristlenose plecos eat plants?
Generally no. They may graze on dying leaves but leave healthy plants alone. If they're eating plants, they're likely underfed โ supplement with more vegetables.
