What Air Pumps Do (And When You Need One)
An air pump pushes atmospheric air through tubing into your aquarium, creating bubbles. That's it mechanically โ but those bubbles serve several important purposes:
- Power sponge filters: Sponge filters are driven entirely by air pumps. The rising air column inside the sponge creates suction that draws water through the filter media. This is the primary reason most aquarists own an air pump.
- Surface agitation: Bubbles breaking at the surface create agitation that promotes gas exchange โ CO2 out, oxygen in. This is critical in heavily stocked tanks, warm water (holds less dissolved oxygen), and during power outages when filters stop running.
- Aeration via airstones: Decorative bubble walls and fine bubble diffusers create visual appeal while oxygenating water. Fish in poorly oxygenated water gasp at the surface โ airstones help prevent this.
- Emergency backup: Battery-powered air pumps are essential emergency equipment. During power outages, filters stop and oxygen depletes quickly. A battery air pump keeps fish alive until power returns.
When you DON'T need an air pump: If you're running a HOB or canister filter that creates adequate surface agitation, your tank is likely well-oxygenated already. Air pumps are redundant in most filtered tanks unless you're also running sponge filters or specifically need extra aeration for heavily stocked setups.
When you DO need one: Sponge filter setups (especially shrimp and breeding tanks), heavily stocked tanks, warm-water tanks (discus at 84ยฐF+ โ warm water holds less oxygen), and as emergency power outage backup.
Types of Airstones
- Standard airstones: Porous ceramic or stone cylinders that produce medium-sized bubbles. Cheap, effective, and easily replaceable. Replace every 2โ3 months as pores clog.
- Fine bubble diffusers: Produce a mist of tiny bubbles โ more attractive and better gas exchange per bubble. Used in CO2 systems and decorative setups.
- Air curtain / bubble wall: Long, flat airstones that create a wall of bubbles along the back of the tank. Dramatic visual effect, especially with LED lighting behind the bubble curtain.
- Flexible air tubing with holes: DIY alternative โ poke small holes in airline tubing for a customizable bubble pattern.
Air Pump Sizing Guide
- 5 gallon: USB nano pump or smallest rated pump. One small sponge filter.
- 10 gallon: Any small air pump (Hygger Quiet Mini, Tetra Whisper AP10). Runs one sponge filter or airstone comfortably.
- 20โ30 gallon: Mid-range pump (Tetra Whisper AP40, Hygger adjustable). Can run dual sponge filters or a sponge filter + airstone.
- 55+ gallon: Larger pump (Tetra Whisper AP150) with a gang valve to split output to multiple airstones or sponge filters.
- 75โ125+ gallon: Commercial-grade pump (Tetra Whisper AP300) or a linear piston pump for serious multi-tank setups.
Reducing Air Pump Noise
Air pumps vibrate โ that's how they work. Reducing noise:
- Place on a soft surface: A folded towel, foam pad, or rubber mat absorbs vibration. Never place directly on hard surfaces.
- Hang it: Suspending the pump by its cord (some have hooks for this) eliminates contact vibration entirely.
- Buy quiet: Invest in a quality quiet pump (Hygger, Eheim) rather than trying to silence a cheap loud one.
- Check valves: Always install a check valve on the airline between the pump and tank. If the pump is below water level and power fails, water can siphon back through the tubing and destroy the pump (and flood your floor).
Air Pumps and Planted Tanks Warning
If you're running CO2 injection in a planted tank, do NOT run an air pump or airstone during the CO2 period. The surface agitation from bubbles rapidly off-gasses dissolved CO2, wasting your injection. If you need supplemental oxygenation, run the air pump only at night (when plants aren't photosynthesizing and actually consume oxygen). A timer can automate this โ air pump on when CO2 off, air pump off when CO2 on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an air pump for my aquarium?
If you're using a sponge filter โ yes, it powers the filter. If you have a HOB or canister filter creating adequate surface agitation โ probably not, but it doesn't hurt. For emergency backup during power outages โ every aquarist should have a battery-powered pump available.
Are air pumps good for fish?
Yes โ they increase dissolved oxygen through surface agitation. This is especially beneficial in warm water, heavily stocked tanks, and during hot weather. However, some fish (bettas) dislike strong current โ use an adjustable pump or gang valve to reduce flow for gentle species.
Why is my air pump so loud?
Place it on a soft surface (towel, foam pad). Hang it if possible. Check the diaphragm for wear โ old diaphragms vibrate more. If it's a cheap pump, upgrading to a quality quiet model (Hygger, Eheim) is the real solution.
