Algae-Eating Ability
Nerites are considered the best algae eaters in the hobby. They consume green spot algae, diatoms (brown algae), soft green algae, and even some types of hair algae. One nerite per 5 gallons is a good stocking rule.
They will NOT eat black beard algae (BBA) or cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).

- GH: 8+ dGH (calcium-rich water prevents shell erosion)
Breeding (or Lack Thereof)
The biggest advantage of nerite snails: they will NOT breed in freshwater. Their larvae require brackish/saltwater to develop. Females may lay small white sesame-seed-like eggs on hard surfaces — these are infertile in freshwater and will not hatch. The eggs can be unsightly but are harmless and eventually dissolve or can be scraped off.
Common Issues
- Escaping: Nerites are notorious escape artists. Keep a tight-fitting lid.
- Flipping over: If a nerite lands upside down, it may not be able to right itself. Check regularly and flip them back.
- Shell erosion: Caused by acidic or soft water. Supplement with calcium (cuttlebone, wonder shells).
