Tank Setup
- Tank size: 30 gallons minimum for a single or pair
- Plants: Heavily planted with floating plants โ pearl gouramis are labyrinth fish that breathe air from the surface. Floating plants provide security and bubble nest building sites.
- Flow: Gentle โ like all labyrinth fish, they prefer calm water
- Hiding spots: Dense vegetation and driftwood provide necessary cover
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 77โ82ยฐF (25โ28ยฐC)
- pH: 5.5โ7.5 (slightly acidic preferred)
- GH: 2โ15 dGH
Labyrinth Organ
Like bettas, pearl gouramis have a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air. You'll see them regularly visit the surface to gulp air โ this is completely normal. Ensure there is always access to the surface (no fully covered water) and that the air above the water is warm (keep the tank lidded so cold air doesn't cause respiratory stress).
Diet & Feeding
Easy to feed. Accept virtually all standard aquarium foods. A varied diet with frozen foods enhances their pearl iridescence. They are also excellent surface feeders and may eat small pest insects that land on the water.
Tank Mates
One of the most peaceful gouramis. Pairs well with virtually all community fish. Avoid keeping with bettas (related species often conflict) or aggressive fin nippers. Multiple males may spar mildly but rarely cause damage in a 30+ gallon tank.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can pearl gouramis live with bettas?
Not recommended. Both are labyrinth fish and males may see each other as rivals. The pearl gourami's similar body shape can trigger aggression from a male betta.
How can I tell male from female?
Males develop a red-orange throat and chest, have a longer, more pointed dorsal fin, and are generally more colorful. Females are rounder and lack the red coloration.
