Tank Setup
- Tank size: 75 gallons absolute minimum, 125+ strongly recommended. Blue tangs grow to 12 inches and are extremely active swimmers.
- Rock work: Extensive rock with swim-throughs and caves. Blue tangs sleep wedged sideways in crevices at night โ provide appropriately sized sleeping spots.
- Flow: Strong โ mimics their natural reef habitat
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 75โ82ยฐF
- pH: 8.1โ8.4
- Salinity: 1.024โ1.026 SG
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: below 10 ppm
Ich Susceptibility
Blue tangs are the most ich-prone fish in the marine hobby. Their thin skin and low natural immunity make them a "canary in the coal mine" โ if ich is present in your system, the blue tang will show it first. Quarantine all new fish for 30+ days before adding to a tank with a blue tang. Many experienced keepers use UV sterilizers specifically to protect their tangs.
Diet & Feeding
- Staple: Nori sheets and marine algae โ offer daily
- Supplements: Frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina pellets, marine flakes
- Important: A primarily algae-based diet prevents HLLE (Head and Lateral Line Erosion)
Sleeping Behavior
Blue tangs sleep on their side, wedged into rock crevices. New owners frequently panic thinking their fish has died. This is completely normal โ they will resume normal swimming when lights come on. Their color also fades significantly at night, which further alarms new keepers.
Tank Mates
Generally compatible with other reef fish. They can be kept with yellow tangs and other tang species in 125+ gallon tanks with proper introduction order (add the blue tang last). Aggressive toward their own species โ only keep one blue tang per tank unless in a 200+ gallon system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a blue tang live in a 55-gallon tank?
No. Blue tangs grow to 12 inches and need extensive swimming space. A juvenile may survive temporarily in a 55, but it's irresponsible long-term. 75 gallons is the absolute minimum; 125+ is appropriate.
Why does my blue tang have white spots?
Almost certainly marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans). Blue tangs are extremely susceptible. Treat the entire tank with a copper-based medication in a quarantine/hospital tank. Do NOT add copper to a reef tank โ it will kill invertebrates.
Why does my blue tang play dead?
They sleep on their side in crevices and fade in color at night. This is normal and not a sign of illness.
