Natural Habitat

Ocellaris clownfish are found throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Andaman Sea to Western Australia. In the wild, they live in symbiotic relationships with host anemones โ€” the clown provides food scraps to the anemone, and the anemone's stinging tentacles protect the clown from predators. A mucus coating on the clownfish prevents them from being stung.

Why Buy Captive-Bred

Always choose captive-bred (CB) clownfish over wild-caught. Captive-bred clowns are:

  • Hardier and better acclimated to aquarium conditions
  • Less susceptible to disease
  • Already eating prepared foods
  • Environmentally sustainable โ€” no impact on wild reefs
  • Available in designer varieties (snowflake, black ice, mocha, etc.)

Tank Setup

  • Tank size: 20 gallons minimum for a pair. Clownfish don't need large tanks โ€” they naturally stay close to their host.
  • Filtration: Standard reef tank setup โ€” live rock, protein skimmer, and a return pump or powerhead
  • Anemone: NOT required. Captive-bred clowns will host in corals (torch, hammer, frogspawn), macroalgae, or even powerheads. If you want to provide an anemone, choose a Bubble Tip Anemone (BTA) โ€” the easiest to keep.
  • Rock work: Provide some structure but clowns don't need extensive caves

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75โ€“82ยฐF
  • pH: 8.0โ€“8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024โ€“1.026 SG
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: below 20 ppm (below 10 for reef)
  • Calcium: 400โ€“450 ppm
  • Alkalinity: 8โ€“12 dKH

Diet & Feeding

  • Staple: High-quality marine pellets (TDO Chroma Boost, Hikari Marine)
  • Supplements: Frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, marine algae
  • Frequency: 2โ€“3 times daily in small amounts

Pairing & Social Behavior

Clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites โ€” all are born male, and the dominant fish in a pair becomes female. When keeping two clownfish:

  • Start with two juvenile captive-bred clowns of different sizes โ€” the larger one will become female
  • Never add a third clownfish to an established pair
  • A bonded pair can be kept for 15+ years

Designer Varieties

  • Snowflake: Irregular white bands
  • Black Ice: Dark body with white bands
  • Mocha/Chocolate: Brown-toned variant
  • Platinum: Entirely white
  • Naked: No stripes at all

All designer varieties have identical care requirements to standard ocellaris.

Tank Mates

Compatible with most peaceful reef fish:

  • Royal grammas, firefish gobies, blennies, cardinalfish
  • Tangs and wrasses (in larger tanks)
  • All invertebrates (corals, shrimp, snails โ€” reef safe)

Avoid other clownfish species (they will fight) and aggressive damsels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do clownfish need an anemone?

No. Captive-bred clownfish thrive without anemones. Many will host in coral alternatives or simply claim a corner of the tank. Anemones are actually harder to keep than clownfish and are not recommended for beginners.

How long do clownfish live?

10โ€“15 years in well-maintained aquariums. Some have been documented living 20+ years.

Can I keep just one clownfish?

Yes. A single clownfish is perfectly happy. They don't need a mate to thrive.
