What Is Neon Tetra Disease?
Neon Tetra Disease (NTD) is caused by the microsporidian parasite Pleistophora hyphessobryconis. The parasite invades the muscle tissue of infected fish, destroying it from the inside. As muscle tissue dies, the fish loses its characteristic coloration โ the vibrant blue and red stripes of a neon tetra fade to patchy, dull, or white.
The difficult reality: There is no known cure for Neon Tetra Disease. Once a fish is infected, the parasite progressively destroys muscle tissue until the fish dies. Treatment focuses entirely on preventing spread to other fish.
What to Do
- Remove the infected fish immediately. NTD spreads when other fish eat infected tissue โ if the diseased fish dies and tank mates nibble the body, they become infected. Remove as soon as symptoms are identified.
- Do NOT return the fish to the main tank. There is no treatment that cures NTD. The infected fish should be isolated permanently or humanely euthanized.
- Monitor remaining fish closely for the next 4โ6 weeks for any signs of color loss or behavioral changes.
- Maintain pristine water quality to support the immune systems of remaining fish.
- Remove any dead fish immediately โ ingesting infected tissue is the primary transmission route.
True NTD vs False Neon Tetra Disease
"False Neon Tetra Disease" is a bacterial infection (Nocardia or mycobacterial) that produces similar symptoms โ color loss, wasting, erratic swimming. Unlike true NTD:
- False NTD may respond to antibiotics (Kanaplex, Furan-2)
- False NTD is caused by bacteria, not a microsporidian parasite
- Without microscopic examination, it's difficult to distinguish between the two
If you suspect NTD, isolate the fish and try antibiotic treatment. If the fish responds and improves, it was likely false NTD (bacterial). If it doesn't respond, it's likely true NTD (untreatable).
Prevention
- Quarantine all new fish for 4 weeks before adding to your main tank.
- Buy from reputable sources: NTD is most commonly introduced via mass-bred, poorly quarantined fish from large-scale suppliers.
- Remove dead fish immediately: Don't let fish bodies remain in the tank where other fish can nibble on them.
- Maintain good nutrition and water quality: Healthy immune systems help resist infection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can neon tetra disease be cured?
True Neon Tetra Disease (Pleistophora) has no known cure. Infected fish should be isolated and humanely euthanized to prevent transmission. "False" NTD (bacterial) may respond to antibiotics.
Can other fish get neon tetra disease?
Yes โ despite the name, NTD can infect other tetra species, rasboras, danios, and barbs. Any fish that eats infected tissue is at risk.
